I got up early to watch Russell play in those PNG tests last year. It did not take long to realise he was nowhere near the level of player we should be entertaining. I wonder how much our board have had to pay out in paying off sub-standard players over the years? Far more than it would cost to get a competent CEO/recruitment specialist.
It's a familiar tale. I watched Luther Burrell's Wire debut away to London, and I could quickly tell that he had no chance of making it in RL. He actually looked like he was anxious about the ball coming to him. Where was the due diligence on that recruitment? Yes, he was a cheap gamble, but throwing him into the team almost as an experiment just made us look unprofessional. I wonder how some of these woeful recruitment decisions are made, and who is responsible for them. As others have said, there are numerous such examples and a lack of accountability.
